Length Converter
Convert metric and international customary lengths from exact defining relationships rather than shortened reciprocal constants.
Validates complete finite input, calculates before display formatting, and names the international foot, yard, inch, and statute mile where convention matters.
What This Category Covers
- Metric and imperial distance units
- Product, apparel, and room dimensions
- Road and travel distances
- Construction and renovation measurements
- Centimeters, inches, feet, meters, kilometers, and miles
Common Use Cases
- Use SI powers of ten for millimetres, centimetres, metres, and kilometres.
- International inch, foot, yard, and statute-mile definitions are used for customary routes.
- A converted decimal does not increase the precision of the source measurement.
Quick Reference
| Task | Recommended Tool | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Body and apparel measurements | CM to Inches | Useful for fit charts and forms. |
| Road distance comparison | KM to Miles | Common while planning international travel. |
| DIY and renovation checks | Feet to CM | Aligns imperial plans with metric tools. |
Definitions First, Display Rounding Last
SI length prefixes are exact powers of ten. The customary routes use exactly 0.0254 metre per international inch, 0.3048 metre per international foot, 0.9144 metre per international yard, and 1609.344 metres per international statute mile.
The obsolete U.S. survey foot differs slightly from the international foot and is not used by these ordinary routes. A nautical mile is exactly 1852 metres and belongs to nautical distance and knot-based speed, not the statute-mile pages.
A reciprocal can have a long decimal expansion even when the defining relationship is exact. The calculator carries the definition through the operation and formats only the displayed result; it cannot add precision to the source measurement.

Length Converter FAQ
Metric and imperial units often do not divide evenly, so decimal output preserves precision until you choose the right rounding.
Yes for reports and planning documents. Inconsistent rounding across related dimensions can create layout and ordering mistakes.
No. Area conversions use squared-unit factors, so use area tools for square feet, square meters, acres, and similar units.
