Power, Current, Voltage, And Energy

The ampere measures electric current. The watt measures power, and the kilowatt is exactly 1000 watts. These quantities are related in a specified electrical system, but an amp value is not inherently equivalent to one watt value.

Energy adds time. A kilowatt is power; a kilowatt-hour is energy accumulated over a duration. Rescaling W to kW does not calculate kWh, consumption, or cost.

RMS, Phase, And Power Factor

AC calculations need labels that identify the measured quantities. The three-phase calculator uses line-to-line RMS voltage and line RMS current and assumes a balanced system; it is not an unbalanced phase analyzer.

Power factor relates active power to apparent power under the selected AC model. It is not efficiency, and it should not be described as universally equal to the cosine of a phase angle for every waveform or load.

Horsepower Is A Family Of Conventions

Mechanical Output And Electrical Input

A motor horsepower rating can describe mechanical shaft output. Converting that rating to kilowatts does not determine electrical input, because efficiency and operating conditions are separate from the unit conversion.

Use the horsepower selector to translate a stated rating. Use the amps and watts calculators only when their electrical-system inputs are actually known.

Before Reusing A Result

  • Keep mode, voltage, RMS labels, and power factor with an amps or watts result.
  • Keep the horsepower convention with hp and kW values.
  • Treat signed current or power according to the sign convention of the source system.
  • Do not use these arithmetic results as conductor, breaker, protection, startup-current, fault, or code-compliance decisions.
